Released in 2000 by Yakima Chief Ranches, the American variety "Simcoe®" has become extremely popular among craft brewers. Its high alpha percentage and low cohumulone content make it a very good base bittering hop. It also has good aroma characteristics. It has a pleasant fruity, yet earthy herbal and grape aroma.
Simcoe is sometimes called "Cascade on steroids".
