Sweet orange peel
Sweet orange peel - shredded
Sweet orange peel is a popular ingredient in beer, especially in styles such as:
- Belgian Witbier: This is a classic style with sweet orange peel and coriander as one of the main flavor and aroma elements.
- Belgian Strong Ale: Sweet orange peel can add complexity and citrus notes to strong Belgian ales.
- Holiday Beers: Often used in holiday beers along with other spices such as cinnamon and cloves.
- Pale Ales and IPAs: Sometimes added to provide bright citrus aromas, especially if hops with a similar profile are used.
Important to know:
- Sweet vs. Bitter Orange Peel: There are two main types of orange peel used in brewing. Sweet orange peel (usually from regular table oranges) provides a more recognizable sweet orange flavor and aroma. Bitter orange peel (often called Curaçao peel) provides more citrus bitterness and complexity.
- When to add: Sweet orange peel is usually added a few minutes before the end of cooking to release the aromas. Sometimes it can also be added at the end of fermentation.
- How much to add: The amount depends on the desired result and beer style. Typically, a few grams to a dozen grams are used for a 20L batch.
Packaging: 50g.
